Who names the ferns? 2018.
Who Names the Ferns? is an interactive installation of text and imagery questioning the language and naming systems surrounding the ferns located in the Memorial University of Newfoundland’s Botanical Gardens. The installation includes digital drawings of fern name plates from the Botanical Garden, as well as half completed drawings left for participants to fill in with text or imagery – giving the public the opportunity to reimagine what a “ghost lady fern” for example could look like, or what a large spikey fern could potentially be named.
Who names the ferns? was held as a pop-up event in conjunction with Eastern Edge's HOLD FAST festival, and Creation with the Garden, an artist in residence initiative made possible by the MUN Botanical Garden, and the Grenfell Visual Arts Program. The event took place in Broken Books, downtown St. John's, and the work is currently on display at the MUN Botanical Gardens.
