Ghost Net Necklace, 2017.
Abandoned, lost, and discarded fishing gear makes up about 10% of ocean litter, and kills over half a million sea-creatures every year. Ghost Net Necklace, represents the trauma these creatures go through, on a human body, in the form of an unwearable necklace.
For this project I collected fragments of discarded fishing nets from the beach in Port au Port, Newfoundland. Using traditional Newfoundland net-knitting techniques, I re-knit the collected fragments, along with my own scrap yarn, back into a fishing net.
