Monitoring Decomposition: The influence of time and the presence of plant life on the decomposition rates of 100% cotton crocheted artwork, explores scientific processes and environmental sustainability from a point of view that uses but is also critical of both of these approaches.
I created a model for a scientific experiment so that I could learn more about the physical impact my artwork has on the Earth, but I laid it out in such a way that it had more variables than I could realistically control for of keep track of throughout the duration of the experiment.
To accompany the experiment, I wrote a scientific report documenting the materials and processes that I began with, my observations as the experiment progressed, and the final results. With the report I am attempting to subvert the authority of the "factual scientific document" by including unexpected types of knowledge such as handed down skills, and reference to the "domestic sciences."
