Nan's Cabin

Nan's Cabin, two 8'x8' hand-pieced quilts, 2023-2025, installed in Fogo Island Art's Long Studio, Spring 2025.

Nan's Cabin is a quilted installation made to look like the front and right side of my grandmother's home in Thornlea, Newfoundland. My nan on my father’s side was raised in Thornlea, a rural community of about 150 people located near the island’s isthmus. When I was growing up, my family would often drive out to her house, saying that we were going to “Nan’s Cabin”. The house was old and poorly maintained, but it had so much personality. It stood halfway up a steep hill with bright yellow siding and green trim. Inside, the walls were covered in peeling layers of floral wallpaper, salon style family photos, lace curtains, and shelves of knick knacks. The cabin was torn down after my grandmother passed away in 2012. Nan's Cabin is a monument to the cabin, and my youth spent growing up there. I plan to continue to grow the project over the coming years and adding more to the cabin ...so stay tuned for that!

Huge thank you to Fogo Island Arts for hosting me as the Inaugural Newfoundland and Labrador Artist-in-Residence from May-June 2025. It was a joy and a treat to get to work on this project in the Long Studio, and to have the space to hang and document the work. The photos below were taken during this residency.

The following photos were taken by Tom Cochrane Photo during a short talk in the Long Studio on Fogo Island where I shared a bit about the project, and invited the community to come over to Nan's Cabin for tea and board games.
